The Politics of Fear

The New Yorker's latest cover ("The Politics of Fear," July 21, 2008) has generated a shitstorm of controversy. Too bad a shockingly large percentage of Americans won't recognize it as satire; for them it will only "confirm" their false beliefs about Barack Obama's religion and patriotism. Worse, David Horsey, a cartoonist from the Seattle-Post Intelligencer has already copied the idea and done a similar cartoon that supposedly satirizes attacks on John McCain and his wife. The only problem is that some of the issues Horsey seizes on are actual issues, including McCain's age and his frightening casual attitude towards making war with Iran.
